Escape to Dhanaulti: A Journey Through Mountains, Temples, and Snow-Kissed Nights
Nestled in the lap of the Garhwal Himalayas, Dhanaulti felt like a hidden gem waiting to be explored. My journey began in Dehradun, winding through scenic mountain roads adorned with towering pine and deodar trees. The crisp mountain air and panoramic views set the perfect tone for an unforgettable solo adventure.
It was the winter holidays and I left Dehradun early in the morning after Christmas, taking the route via Mussoorie. The cool breeze and picturesque landscapes made the drive an experience in itself. I stopped briefly at a roadside tea stall, sipping hot chai while soaking in the lush greenery and mist-covered valleys. The views of the Doon valley below were lit in the rising sun were mesmerizing.
The excitement built up as I approached Dhanaulti, where the untouched beauty and peaceful ambiance welcomed me warmly. On the way I met some youngsters biking their way to the mountain retreat for a holiday. Took some pictures for them and continued on the journey. I had booked myself in a resort that is perched on a hill side with beautiful views of the mountains.

Hiking to Surkanda Devi Temple & Evening at Eco Park with Street Food Delights
A visit to Dhanaulti felt incomplete without hiking to the revered Surkanda Devi Temple. Located at an altitude of 2,757 meters, the temple offered an exhilarating trek through dense forests and scenic trails. The 2 km hike from Kaddukhal tested my endurance but rewarded me with mesmerizing 360-degree views of the snow-capped Himalayas. The sight of the majestic peaks – Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba – was simply surreal, making every step of the trek worthwhile.
After the rewarding trek, I made my way back to Dhanaulti and spent the evening near Eco Park, a serene spot known for its lush greenery and scenic walking trails. As the sun began to set, the golden hues cast a magical spell over the hills. I treated myself to some local roadside food – piping hot Maggi, fire roasted corn, and momos, all of which tasted even better in the cool mountain air.
Music, Campfire, and Light Snowfall
As the night set in, I headed to my campsite, where fellow travelers had gathered around a bonfire. The warmth of the fire, combined with good music and shared travel stories, created a perfect ambiance. Just when I thought the night couldn’t get any better, tiny snowflakes began to drift from the sky, adding a magical touch to the moment. I enjoyed a delicious dinner under the starlit sky, savoring traditional Pahadi cuisine. The flickering flames, soulful melodies, and gentle snowfall made the evening truly unforgettable.
A Clear Morning and Himalayan Views
The next morning, I woke up to a perfectly clear sky. As I began my journey back to Dehradun, I was greeted with breathtaking views of the Himalayas. The majestic peaks stood tall against the blue sky, creating a picture-perfect scene. The drive back felt almost meditative, with the winding roads and serene beauty making me reflect on the wonderful experiences of the past two days.

Though I have been to Dhanaulti several times as it’s close to hometown, but this trip left me with memories of awe-inspiring landscapes, spiritual solace, and heartwarming moments. The blend of adventure, nature, and cultural experiences made this solo journey an unforgettable one. As I reached Dehradun and shared stories of my escape to the hills with family, I knew that the misty mountains and tranquil surroundings would call me back again soon.
