A morning stroll to Skogafoss can refresh anyone and so it did to us. One could have stayed there forever but we are travellers and are bound to move forward. It was a nice sunny day and the wind was blowing just fine.
Next destination was a trek to the Solheimsandur plane wreck which was crashed here mysteriously in 1973. It took us an hour to walk 3.6 kilometres because of the high wind gust. The wreck is just a wreck and a memory of previous times but with the silver plane wreck against the black sand beach and the humongous glacier on the other side the scene is unlike anything we had ever seen before.
While we reached back car, it had started raining. Our next destination was the Dyrhólaey light house. You can drive until the light house but the rain and the wind was so sharp that it was hitting like needles. We took a walk around, took some pictures and headed to next destination.
Black sand beach restaurant on Reynisfjara black sand beach was good and food was delicious. This beach is considered to be very dangerous because of its unpredicted waves and high winds. The hexagonal basalt columns on the beach can read out loud the story of the angry waves at the beech. The design of Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik is based on these columns. The cave around the columns on the beach is another proof of how harsh the wind and water can be. Fighting with the rain and the wind we somehow reached the car and sat there warming our frozen hands to move further.
From a view point called ‘nice view of Vik’ the view of the town, sea and the mountains is just breathtaking. The two troll mountains have a story for the Icelanders and they are another sight for the camera.
After a few pictures we headed towards the hotel Laki while making two small pit stops. Laufskálavarða is a lava ridge just off the main Ring Road #1. Traditionally, first-time travelers trekking across the black sands of Mýrdalssandur would leave little stacks of stones for good luck and so did we. This place is also a tribute to all the lives lost (mankind, flora and fauna) in the volcanic eruptions. What nature takes, it gives back in a different form. The places where lava flowed once and made the destruction has been taken over by beautiful green moss. The place now looks something out of a Star Wars or game of thrones movie. Both latest movies have scenes that were actually shot here in this area in Iceland.
Finally we reached hotel and after checking in took a stroll to the beautiful lake nearby before retiring for the day. It’s cloudy and so no chance of viewing the Aurora even tonight. The hunt and the hope is still on…
